A general rule in business is that in order for a business to be successful, it must provide products or services that people want. That rule continues to apply with the advent of new forms of business that have arisen with the Internet. Websites that operate as stores must provide goods that people want or they will go out of business. Thus, websites like must provide a service that will benefit its visitors.

In Setting the Foundation for a Social Networking Website, I mentioned that after creating this website, I began to compile a list of links that encompassed different aspects of literature. These areas include book reviews, creative writing programs, bookstores and writing jobs, book fairs, book printers, and other literary resources. As mentioned, the list has grown to more than 400 links. The purpose of the links is to assist visitors with locating resources that will benefit their literary career. But that is not all this website offers.

What are Literary Enthusiasts Looking For?
There are many people writing books, but few know how to get their book published. Of the authors who know how to publish their books, they are unable to succeed without having a support system to help them promote their work. It is not enough to think of interesting ideas, mix them together, and write a good story. Even if an author has a good editor to help improve their writing, they must still find innovative ways to promote their book. That will likely become the biggest obstacle they encounter, which is made easier if they have people supporting them throughout the process.

Building a Team
When a writer begins writing a book, one of the first people they contact to join their team is an editor. An editor’s job is to review a writer’s work, proofread it, and offer suggestions on how it can be improved through the addition and removal of parts of the written work. Regardless of how good an individual writer is, it is necessary for them to have their work reviewed by a competent editor. Another person that a writer wants on their team is an agent. Although it is possible to succeed as a writer without an agent, having an agent makes the publishing process much easier. An agent is able to offer the guidance that a writer needs, help them develop their writing, and provide them with access to human and tangible resources they would not otherwise be able to obtain. The human resources an agent can bring to a writer are important because these people can help get the writer’s work published. Many of these people will only work with writers who are represented by agents.

Publishers are the people and entities who serve as gatekeepers to the traditional literary publishing system. They provide the resources necessary to publish a writer’s work so that it is available in different markets for others to read. Writers who choose to rely upon the traditional publishing system view publishers as “Gods” because they make their jobs easier. All the writer does is produce the work and pass it on to the publisher, who then ensures the manufacturing of the book, promotes it, makes the book available to the public, and collects royalties that are distributed to the writer after costs are deducted. One of the best pieces of news that a writer seeking to work within the traditional system can hear is to learn that a publisher has chosen to publish their work.

Give the People What They Want
Since authors looking to work within the established literary publishing system are looking for editors, agents, and publishers, I thought it prudent to provide information on those resources on this website. To accomplish that, I began to research editors, agents, and publishers and gathered information about the people and companies operating in those fields. But that was not done solely to benefit authors. It was also undertaken to benefit the literary professionals in those fields, and bring more exposure to them.

The primary mission of this website is to serve as a forum for networking between all of the people and entities operating within the literary industry. To accomplish that, the intent is for it to not focus exclusively on a particular type of actor, but to offer something to all actors. In order to benefit writers who visit this website, I gathered as much information as I could on editors, agents, and publishers as I could find. That involved spending numerous hours mining literary websites and reviewing the data that I gathered, which was done with the help of others. (Although it is easy to start a website alone, it is hard to run it by yourself once it grows beyond a certain point). I then added that information to this website so that writers could use it to benefit their literary careers. It also served another purpose.

Editors, agents, and publishers often want new clients to work with. With their information on this website, writers who are interested in them will contact them, which will serve that purpose for those literary professionals. That will result in editors earning money from writers contacting them about editing their work; agents having more clients to represent, resulting in an increase in their reputation and earnings; and publishers expanding their market share of the literary industry, by adding more books to their catalogs. (I’ve noticed that many of these professionals, particularly agents, change companies often. It is to their benefit to keep us advised of any changes to their contact information).

The Purpose is to Serve the People
As a writer, I know the struggle. I know what it’s like to have written a good story, and have a hard time trying to get people to read it. The struggle is so intense that I opted early to forgo the traditional publishing industry, and self-publish my books. That included not spending a lot of time trying to get an agent or publisher, because I felt that energy could be directed elsewhere. However, I understand the desire for other authors to avoid the struggle and pursue relationships with people who can help them succeed in publishing their writing. Therefore, all of the information gathered on editors, agents, and publishers was done to benefit them, while also helping those literary professionals pursue their own goals.

When operating a social networking website, it is important to provide the services that people want. The operative word in the previous sentence is “networking.” In order for people to network, they must have a way to connect. This website accomplishes that by compiling information on the different actors in the literary industry, providing a forum for people to find them, and facilitating people meeting new people. But that was not all. I compiled a list of literary events occurring throughout the world so that our visitors and members can discover the details of events that might benefit their literary career. And links to news articles about literary issues from throughout the world are added daily to keep visitors informed. Coupled with all of the user-generated content and other features, there is something that all literary enthusiasts can enjoy and benefit from.
